Delineation of Leachate at Oko-Filling Dumpsite Igando, Lagos, Nigeria Using Electrical Resistivity Methods

Abstract: Detailed knowledge of delineation of leachate at Oko-Filling dumpsite is crucial for improved groundwater quality management that serves the adjoining communities. The electrical resistivity methods were applied to investigate the extent at which contaminants from the dumpsite have infiltrated the subsurface lithology and the groundwater in the neighboring communities. Oko-Filling is situated between latitudes 6° 33’ 43’’ N and 6° 33’ 58’’ N and longitudes 3° 15’ E and 3° 15’ 20’’ E, in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria. Fifteen (15) vertical electrical soundings (VES) were carried out using Schlumberger array, while 2D electrical resistivity survey using Wenner array was conducted along five profiles for the survey. The VES data were interpreted using partial curve matching and computer iteration techniques and the pseudo section contouring method was used to plot the data from the 2D resistivity survey. The results of the VES showed that the subsurface of the area can be characterized into five different layers: topsoil, clay, sandy clay, clayey sand and sand. Resistivity of the study area varied between 3.7 and 1874 Ωm. The subsurface is also characterized by occurrence of near horizontal layering that typifies a sedimentary environment. The very low resistivity (<25 Ωm) portion of the clay layer in profile 2 may be due to leachate. The basal part of the clay unit in profile 3 is defined by an anomalously low resistivity zone (<30 Ωm), suggestive of contaminated zone.  The obvious anomalously low resistivity units that occupy most part of the 2D sections of profiles 4 and 5, is a clear indication of a contaminated zone. The water bearing units of the subsurface serving the nearby communities is contaminated to depths of about 42 m, which could pose serious health challenges to neighboring communities.

Phytochemical And Amino Acid Profiling Of Different Cowpea Varieties

Abstract: Phytochemical and amino acid profile of different cowpea varieties were studied. The cowpea varieties were coded as sample BWB (Big white cowpea), sample SWB (Small white cowpea), sample OBN (“Oyin” (sweet) cowpea) and sample DBN (Drum cowpea). Antinutritional factors and amino acid profile of the cowpea varieties were evaluated using standard procedures. The phytochemical properties of the cowpea varieties indicated that flavonoid ranged from 4.41–5.70 mg/100g, saponin from 0.10-0.59 mg/100g, tannin from 0.25–1.10 mg/100g, phytate from 4.33-10.42 mg/100g, polyphenol from 0.36-0.54 mg/100g and trypsin inhibitor from 6.47-18.90 mg/100g, respectively. The essential amino acids result showed that leucine ranged from 6.68–8.12 g/100g, lysine from 3.04–7.16 g/100g, isoleucine from 3.74-6.29 g/100g, phenylalanine 3.91–6.33 g/100 g, arginine 3.82–6.21 g/100g, valine 3.82–6.02 g/100g, methionine 0.91–1.94 g/100g, histidine 2.15–4.23 g/100g, threonine from 2.92-4.92 g/100g, respectively. Threonine not detected in sample DBN. Non-essential amino acids results of the cowpea revealed that glycine varied from 2.87-5.22 g/100g, serine from 3.04-8.13 g/100 g, aspartic acid 4.61–13.45 g/100 g, glutamic acid 2.86–5.88 g/100g, alanine from 3.21-5.19 g/100g, cysteine from 0.45-1.15 g/100 g, tyrosine from 3.31-3.69 g/100g and proline from 2.45-6.45 g/100g, respectively. The study result showed that total amino acid of the cowpea samples values ranged from 54.88-93.77, total essential amino acids from 31.84-51.13% and total non-essential amino acids 23.04–45.36 %, respectively. The results showed that antinutritional factors were lowest in BWB sample while essential, non-essential and total essential amino acids were abundant in SWB sample.

Strategies for improving vocational and technical entrepreneurship skills acquisition in Colleges of Education of Southwest Nigeria amidst recessed economy

Abstract: Entrepreneurship skill acquisition is becoming more tedious and challenging for lecturers to imbibe in their students for self-dependent. The study explores strategies for enhancing vocational and technical entrepreneurship skills acquisition in Colleges of Education of Southwest Nigeria amidst recessed economy. The research utilized a descriptive survey research design of one hundred and fifty five (155) lecturers from three Colleges of Education using a multi-stage sampling technique. Data collection was conducted via a self-structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics in terms of frequencies, percentage and cumulative percentage while the null hypotheses were tested using independent sample t-tests and regression analysis. The finding reveals that there is no significant difference (p<0.05) in male and female respondents on the critical role expected of vocational and technical education institution for entrepreneurship skill acquisition especially when supported by effective public awareness programs and qualified practically oriented educators. The study revealed that there is a significant difference (p<0.05) in improving competency of vocational and technical institutions and staff through provision of modern training facilities that can effectively improve vocational and technical skill acquisition for entrepreneurship in a recessed economy with a regression coefficient (R) of 0.02 and correlation square of 0.92 and β weight of 0.08. The study concludes that there is no significant gender-based difference in perceptions and there should be continuous professional development and supportive policies. The study recommends that public awareness, recruiting qualified educators and promoting regular professional development activities to strengthen vocational and technical education impact on entrepreneurship acquisition.

Addressing Urban Heat Islands through Green Building Strategies: A Literature Review

Abstract: The combined effects of local warming brought on by urbanisation and global climate change are making urban heat a growing problem for many cities. Urban heat-related issues must be addressed immediately because these phenomena have substantial negative effects on the environment, the economy, society, and human health. Although buildings play a significant role in urban heat, they also offer opportunities for mitigation through the decarbonisation of the built environment. The building industry has acknowledged green buildings (GBs) as an innovative philosophy and practice. GBs have been suggested as a way to reduce the effects of urban heat islands and other heat-related issues. The purpose of this study is find the most important factors of green building which can be impactful for reducing UHI. Using an extensive literature review methodology, the study identified eighteen important references following a thorough screening of more than 1400 preliminary studies. Finally 10 papers have been selected. These sources concentrate on the ways that green buildings mitigate urban heat through different approaches, such as cutting carbon emissions, lessening the effects of artificial landscapes, and enhancing energy efficiency. The findings indicate that GBs significantly contribute to reducing the urban heat problem by lowering carbon emissions, minimising artificial landscapes, and promoting energy-efficient designs.  This review provides a holistic analysis of the role of GBs in urban heat mitigation, aiming to inform future research in urban planning and green building development.
