Assessment of Honey Quality Indicators: A Case Study of Honey from Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo Apiary and Selected Roadside Honey in Southwest, Nigeria.

Abstract: This study evaluated honey samples from the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RGP) apiary and roadside vendors in Southwest Nigeria for physicochemical properties, proximate composition, and heavy metal content. RGP honey exhibited the highest acid value (77.73 mgNaOHg⁻¹) and peroxide value (0.44 meqO₂kg⁻¹), while hawker honey showed the lowest values (acid: 43.42 mgNaOHg⁻¹, peroxide: 0.32 meqO₂kg⁻¹). Iodine values ranged from 16.17 mgI₂/100g (hawker honey) to 19.77 mgI₂/100g (RGP honey). Specific gravity varied between 0.68 g/cm³ (RGP honey) and 1.21 g/cm³ (hawker honey). Moisture content was highest in hawker honey (25.20%) and lowest in RGP honey (20.61%), which also had the highest ash, crude protein, and fiber contents. Carbohydrate content ranged from 69.46% (RGP honey) to 70.62% (free hawker honey). Heavy metal analysis revealed safe chromium and copper levels, with no detectable cadmium or lead. RGP honey had a strong sweet aroma and flavor, and sample colors varied from light gold to dark amber. These findings indicate that honey samples from the region possess favorable qualities, making them suitable for human consumption and animal feed formulations.

Abstract: This paper presents the use of STEM education concept of the research in mathematics for textile design, where firstly the nature of the problem is proposed by using the scientific concept, then the technology is formed in terms of a graphic design, the mathematic concern is interpreted, finally, the use of the design is used to form the pattern for engineering usage, where the Geometer’s Sketchpad (GSP) is a tool to design artworks from Cartesian coordinate products. The simple mathematic formation is given and described. The objective of this work is the use of the STEM technique for graphics design based on theCartesian geometric transformation. The obtained result has shown that the Cartesian product is set in the square, converging segment, the Kaleidoscopic and circular gridsby using the geometric transformations, which are rotation, reflectionandtranslation. Byusing the GSP scan for modifying the grid size, color and pattern, the created geographic figures and many more beautiful patterns can be obtained for the required applications.

Thanking in Saudi Academic Emails

Abstract: This paper considers the pragmatic analysis of thanking by testing existing frameworks from interpersonal communication for rapport management (Spencer-Oatey, 2002) against a new dataset that comes from a computer mediated form of communication, namely emails gathered from educational exchanges between students and staff in a Saudi Arabian higher education context. The collected data consists of 140 emails. The thanking in the email were coded against Wong's (2010) framework of thanking. In order to explore their rapport potential, the participants were also interviewed. The key research questions which drive this study are:

§  How does the use of thanking or expressions of gratitiude vary according to the gender and role of the email sender?

§  How is rapport potential of thanking perceived by the participants in this study?

        The analysis showed that, although thanking in a Saudi context bears some similarity with thanking in other English contexts, there are some differences in the use, choice and form of thanking, but there are thanking phenomena in the data that have thus far not been accounted for. Likewise, while previous frameworks on thanking remain useful, they may need to be extended to cover more possible thanking expressions that may occur. Wong's (2010) framework in particular, when used in coding the Saudi academic email thanking, showed some limitations in accommodating the Saudi thanking expressions. Thus, it was essential to adopt it and do some modification on it, i.e. add one more thanking classification other thanking to make the system more flexible and capable of covering all the thanking strategies that occurred in the data. Wong's (2010) framework might also need to be extended by adding an additional classification that combine both classifications B and C, since the current study found that, in some occasions, it was hard to set boundaries between them. This proposed solution might help in overcoming this problem, through helping to provide a more accurate coding which may consequently be reflected on the accuracy of the results in a given study.

Future and Present Time Perspectives as Predictors of Academic Engagement in a Private Institution in Malaysia

Abstract: Time perspective has always been associated with the ability of the human cognition to make a distinction in the passing of time into frames of past, present and future. Due to this fact, time perspective could play an important role in understanding students’ academic engagement better. This research endeavors to explore the relationship between time perspective and academic engagement among undergraduates. A total of 107 undergraduates participated in the research. Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI), and Academic Engagement Scale for Grade School Students (AES-GS) were used to identify respondents’ time perspective and academic engagement. The findings indicated that there were significant relationship between time perspective and academic engagement. Further analysis using multiple regressions found that future time perspective has the strongest predictive value toward cognitive engagement. Understanding this relationship between time perspective and academic engagement can contribute towards the development of a comprehensive psychological model that can become the basis for future intervention programs aimed towards improving academic engagement.
