Viral Load and Socio-Demographic Factors on Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Coinfection in HIV-Infected Individuals in Calabar Metropolis, Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract: HIV/AIDS remains a significant public health issue globally, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. In Nigeria, high HIV prevalence has driven numerous health interventions and studies due to associated morbidities. Coinfections with HBV and HCV are common among HIV-positive individuals, complicating clinical management and accelerating disease progression. These infections share similar transmission routes, such as sexual contact and intravenous drug use. This study aimed to determine the impact of viral load and socio-demographic factors on HBV and HCV coinfection in HIV-positive patients in Calabar Metropolis, Cross River State, Nigeria. This was a cross-sectional study involving 200 patients diagnosed with HIV attending an ART clinic at Dr. Henshaw Memorial Hospital, IDH, Calabar. The demographic data were obtained using a questionnaire. Serum samples were tested for the detection of HBsAg and HCV using ELISA kits. The results show that HBV coinfection was 28%. The prevalence was higher in females (29%) and individuals aged >65 years (57.1%). No cases of HCV infection were detected in the study population. Analysis by viral load revealed that individuals with a viral load of 200+ copies/ml had the highest HBV coinfection rate (43.2%), followed by those with 21–75 copies/ml (29.5%), 76–199 copies/ml (13.3%), and <20 copies/ml (26%), this means that individuals with higher HIV viral loads are more susceptible to HBV coinfection. Unemployed patients were also more infected with HBV (54%). Based on marital status, widows and divorcees had a higher HBV prevalence (14.3%). The prevalence was higher in students (16.7%) and patients with a primary education background (25%). The absence of HCV coinfection in the study population suggests either a lower exposure rate or effective management of HCV in this region. Regular screening for HBV should be integrated into the routine care of people living with HIV/AIDS, especially for high-risk groups such as older individuals and those with higher viral loads.

ASSESSMENT OF PESTICIDE RESIDUES IN WATER AND SEDIMENTS OBTAINED FROM RIVER TARABA IN TELLA TARABA STATE,NIGERIA

Abstract:The contamination of pesticides in water and sediments from River Taraba was investigated to evaluate/determine the contamination status and potential hazard in the river. A total of twelve samples were collected and analyzed using GC 7890B, MSD 5977A. Statistical analysis revealed that the mean concentrations of pesticide residues in water samples ranged from 0.182 ± 0.031 - 2.48 ± 0.098 mg/L, while in sediments ranged from 1.17 ± 1.3 - 47.7 ± 29.4 mg/kg. The pesticides risk assessment in water recorded 80.0 % high risk, 6.70 %  medium and 13.3 low risks respectively, while the pesticides risk assessment in sediments recorded 88.9% high risk and 11.1 % medium risk. The results of the RQ revealed that the RQ values in sediments were generally higher than the RQ values obtained in water. This could be attributed to the fact that sediments serve as natural sink to chemical substances. Therefore, there should be periodic assessment of water and sediments along the river to provide a baseline data and critical information to encourage effective monitoring for maximum utilization of the water resources.

DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF UNDISTURBED SOIL SAMPLER FOR SOIL CORE ANALYSIS

Abstract: Soil sampling and testing are vital operations in the field of agronomy and geotechnics; as they are important means by which soil fertility and changes taking place within soils subjected to structural loads can be assessed. Also, the most reliable means by which the integrity of reclamation or remediation practices on soils can be assessed is by sampling and testing. However, the reliability of soil samples as true representation of the soil natural state depends on the nature of the undisturbed soil sampler used. In this study, undisturbed soil sampler was designed, fabricated and tested to provide an index for the soil core analysis in terms of the soil’s bulk density. The undisturbed soil sampler was fabricated by using a combination of 5 mm stainless steel and mild steel plates and operates on the principle of impact induced by screw jack. The sampler was tested on the field of the Faculty of Engineering in terms of the variability of the soil’s bulk densities with different depth ranges of the soil profile. Such results will help in validating the reliability of soil samples obtained with the undisturbed soil sampler, as a true representation of the condition of the soils in the site. This will provide accurate soil test results in terms of the determination of engineering properties of such soils in-situ.

Abstract: To synthesize and characterize uniform and stable PVA-based composite membranes incorporating TiO₂ and ZrO₂ nanoparticles (PVA/TiO₂, PVA/ZrO₂, and PVA/TiO₂/ZrO₂) using the solution casting method. And investigate the structural, morphological, surface chemistry and optical properties of these composite membranes through advanced characterization techniques encompassed X-ray diffraction (XRD) study, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis and develop hybrid membranes that exhibit more improved characteristics because of composites versatile properties resulting from the combining of two inorganic structural components with polymer. These characteristics offer an appealing choice for a range of applications.
